VR Digital Twin for Oil Production

The IBM VR Digital Twin of the entire oil production chain is a virtual reality application designed to onboard and educate new management employees. It visualizes all key processes in the oil production chain, from extraction to delivery, allowing managers and directors to familiarize themselves with operations without leaving their office. Integrated with digital production management systems, it enables real-time data visualization and more effective decision-making. The VR simulator includes training and forecasting features, enhancing management practice and predicting outcomes based on user actions.

Challenge & approach
IBM aimed to simplify the onboarding process for new managers in the oil sector by visualizing production facilities. The challenge was to create a solution that allowed new employees to virtually visit production sites, eliminating the need for expensive and time-consuming travel to site locations.
Immercity proposed a VR digital twin integrated with real production data and management functionalities. This approach would not only immerse new employees in the production process, but also enhance their training quality and efficiency.

Our team scanned and modeled all production sites, developing a virtual production complex using Unreal Engine 4. We integrated the application with the production management system and implemented simulation models based on real-time data. A forecasting system was also incorporated.
The integration of this VR solution into the onboarding process resulted in a 20% improvement in training effectiveness and reduced the onboarding time by an average of 18 days, demonstrating significant efficiency gains for new employees.
